Memphis Horticultural Society Virtual Program – Flight of the Monarchs (& Other Mid-South Butterflies) with Mary Schmidt

October 6 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Join us for this virtual program via Zoom with Mary Schmidt, Curator of the Backyard Wildlife Center at Lichterman Nature Center.

Butterflies are undoubtedly the most popular insects and are prized visitors to the gardens of even the most experienced gardener.  Mary Schmidt, Curator of the Backyard Wildlife Center at Lichterman Nature Center, will share tips on how to attract more butterflies to your yard, and how to identify the common Mid-South butterfly species.  She will also answer those questions you’ve always had:  Where do butterflies go in the winter?  How long do butterflies live?  How can you tell a butterfly from a moth?

Mary Schmidt has been engaging people with nature since she was a child leading her siblings on hikes through the forests and creek surrounding their childhood home outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her passion for nature and exploration lead her to work across the country — Kansas, Hawaii, Maryland, and Kentucky — before finally settling in Tennessee.  She has a bachelor’s degree in Biology and Biodiversity and has been interpreting and caring for native plants and animals for over 15 years.  She has worked for city, county and state governments as well as non-profit organizations focused on connecting people with nature.  She has been the Backyard Wildlife Center Curator at Lichterman Nature Center since 2013.   In her free time she enjoys, birding, gardening and spending time outdoors with her husband and daughter.

The speaker will start at 7:00 p.m., so please plan to join us shortly before that time.
